What You Need to Know about Pipe Corrosion

08/01/2016

Most of the pipes in modern homes are comprised of the metal copper. This material is popular for plumbing pipes because of its resistance to rust, as well as its light weight and general longevity. However, it is not invincible. There are a number of problems that can afflict your copper pipes, one of which is corrosion. Let’s take a look at some of the different corrosion types that can cause problems for your pipes.

Pitted Corrosion

Pitted corrosion is caused by the presence of chlorine particles in the area around the pipe. These particles eat through the copper in the pipes, opening up small leaks known as pinhole leaks. These pinhole leaks release only a small amount of water, too small to give off any recognizable warning signs. But over a long enough period of time they can still cause an immense amount of water damage, especially to drywall and wood. Most homeowners don’t even realize that they have pinhole leaks in their pipes until they notice the huge water damaged area around them. The only way to prevent pinhole leaks from forming is to have your pipes professionally inspected at least once a year.

Formicary Corrosion

Formicary corrosion is the result of formaldehyde particles interacting with the copper pipes. Formaldehyde weakens the copper by eating microscopic holes through it. These holes vaguely resemble an ant hill when viewed under a microscope, which is where they got their name. Unfortunately, there is no way to really solve this problem. You just need to make sure that your pipes are inspected often enough to catch any leaks that may develop because of it.
