Why It Might Be a Good Idea to Replace Your Old Water Heater

09/28/2015

Water heaters can last a very long time, especially if they’re well cared for. Just because they can last that long, though, doesn’t mean that they should. Believe it or not, there comes a point where keeping an old water heater running past its prime is just more expensive than replacing it would be. Let’s take a look at why you might want to replace your water heater, even if it hasn’t broken down yet.

Loss of Efficiency

This is the single biggest reason to replace your water heater after it reaches a certain age. Once a water heater gets past 15 years old or so, it has accumulated enough wear and tear that it experiences a serious decline in efficiency. It will be overwhelmed more easily by even modest demand, and will take longer to replace water that is used. This efficiency loss can cost you a lot of money over time, which is why it is often better to replace your water heater when it gets to this point. As soon as you have a new water heater installed, you’ll notice an immediate difference.

Increased Repair Costs

The older your water heater is, the harder it’s going to be to find replacement parts when you need them. When you can find replacement parts, it’s going to cost more to obtain them because they will likely be out of production. This is yet another reason why you should replace your water heater once it gets older than 15. The newer the water heater is, the cheaper it’s going to be to fix it.
