Which Is Better, Hydro Jetting or Drain Snaking?

Drain and sewer pipes are responsible for disposing of all kinds of waste in a safe and sanitary fashion. Naturally, that means that sometimes they get clogged with all sorts of junk. When that happens, you need to have the pipes cleaned out to restore them to full function. There are a couple of different methods that are employed to clean out drain and sewer pipes. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each.

Drain Snaking

A drain snake is a long cord with an auger bit at the end. The other end of the cord is attached to either a hand crank or a power drill. The cord is lowered into the pipe until it makes contact with the clog, at which point the auger is used to drill through the blockage. This is the standard treatment for clogged drains. While this does work quite well, it has a couple of drawbacks. The biggest con for drain snaking is that it only bores a hole in the clog as large as the auger bit. This means that it will likely be easier for clogs to form in that location in the future, and that drain snaking is not good for preventive cleaning.

Hydro-Jetting

Hydro-jetting involves using a long hose to spray a high-pressure stream of water through your pipes. This cleans all of the waste out of your pipes, leaving them much cleaner than if they had simply been drain snaked. The downside is that some pipes are not built to handle the kind of pressure, and can be heavily damaged if exposed to it. So, you should always talk to a plumber first about whether or not your pipes can handle it.
