Problems that Lead to Pipe Replacement

In the mid-1960s almost all new plumbing pipes installed were made of copper, rather than the iron common to older homes. The reason for this is that copper is much more resistant to rust and other kinds of corrosion than iron, allowing it to last longer. However, this doesn’t mean copper pipes are invincible. There are still a number of issues that can ruin your pipes and require pipe replacement. Read on to find out more about a few of them.

Tree Roots

If you have any trees in your yard, or even the next yard over, your pipes are in danger of tree root infestation. Tree roots will naturally seek out water, and if your water or sewer line are in the vicinity the roots will grow into them. This puts holes in the pipes, and restricts the flow of water through them. In most cases, the roots can be cut out and the holes patched. Sometimes, though, the damage is simply too widespread to fix. At that point, the best you can do is replace your pipes and hope the tree roots don’t reach them again.

Hard Water

This is another common cause for pipe replacement. Hard water is water with a higher mineral content than normal. It occurs in many different parts of the country as the mineral deposits that create it are widespread. As hard water flows through the pipes in your home, it will leave minor amounts of minerals. These minerals build up into lime scale, which restricts the flow of water through the pipes. Again, if caught early enough, lime scale can be removed without needing to replace the pipe. However, too much lime scale buildup will require pipe replacement in order to be removed.
