What to Do During a Plumbing Emergency

01/11/2016

You should always call a plumber and schedule an appointment whenever you detect a problem with your plumbing. However, some plumbing problems just can’t wait for a convenient time to be addressed. If you have a plumbing problem that needs to be addressed right away, take the following steps to mitigate the damage as much as possible.

Turn Off the Water

The number one concern with any plumbing problem is water damage. If you have ever had to deal with moderate to severe water damage, you know how much it can cost to repair. Even a small leak from a pipe or toilet can rot out the entire area around it, given enough time. So as soon as you notice a plumbing emergency the first thing you should do is turn off the water. If you can’t locate the specific valve to shut off water to that section, just turn off the water for the entire house. Better safe than sorry.

Clear the Area

You can’t do much about any water damage that has already happened, but you can still mitigate any future damage as much as possible. Once the water is shut off, remove any furniture or other objects from the area and mop up as best you can. That done, you’ve pretty much done all you can. Which brings us to…

Call for Emergency Plumbing Services

Even if you manage to shut off the water and clean up the surrounding area, it is not a good idea to wait before calling for repairs. The sooner the problem can be dealt with, the better off your plumbing system will be. So, make sure that you call for repairs as soon as possible.
