What You Need to Know About Backflow

02/08/2016

There are a wide variety of different problems that can afflict a home’s plumbing. Some are common, but never more than an annoyance. Some are rarer, but can cause terrible damage to the plumbing system and the home. The worst, though, are those that are both common and damaging. Backflow is one of those problems. Let’s take a look at what causes backflow, and why you need backflow prevention services.

The Cause of Backflow

Pressure plays a huge part in keeping your plumbing system operating properly. Normally, your plumbing system feeds into your sewer system through a balance of pressure, and assisted by gravity. When that pressure balance is disrupted, however, either from a sudden increase in pressure in the sewer system or a decrease in the plumbing system, sewer water can be sucked backwards up into the house. This often contaminates the entire plumbing system, which is only designed to handle fresh water. Once this happens, it becomes unsafe to use the plumbing system until it can be flushed out and sterilized.

Backflow Prevention

Backflow is extremely common, so much so that most cities mandate that all homes be outfitted with backflow prevention devices. However, if you happen not to have a backflow prevention device, you should have one installed as soon as possible. Most backflow prevention devices are one-way valves that prevent water flowing back up into the house. As long as the device is properly maintained on a regular basis, it will continue to protect your home. Be sure to schedule maintenance for your backflow prevention device at least once a year, in order to ensure that it remains in proper operating condition.
