Calcium Deposits, and What They Indicate

05/23/2016

Have you ever noticed a white, chalky substance building up around your faucets or your bathtub? If so, you may have a problem. Those are called calcium deposits, and they’re a bigger issue than simply being unsightly. Calcium deposits indicate that you have hard water in your home, which will need to be dealt with as quickly as possible. Let’s take a look at where calcium deposits come from, and what they mean.

Hard Water

Hard water is water with higher levels of calcium and magnesium in it, usually due to it filtering through limestone or similar rock before being siphoned out of the water table. The magnesium and calcium in the water tend to slip through municipal treatment facilities, and get pumped into your home. As hard water flows through the pipes in your home, it deposits small amounts of the minerals it carries on the surfaces it touches. These are calcium deposits. The problem is that over time, these calcium deposits grow.

Lime Scale

Once the calcium deposits grow large enough, they are referred to as lime scale. Lime scale is built up enough that it can actually restrict the flow of water through the pipes in which it is located. This can cause a massive drop in the efficiency of the system. Lime scale is also extremely difficult to remove without damaging the pipe to which it is attached. If you want to protect your plumbing system from the effects of lime scale, the best bet is to install a water treatment system to prevent it from entering your plumbing network in the first place. Water softeners can make sure that the calcium and magnesium content in the water are neutralized before it enters the home.
