What We Do During a Water Heater Maintenance Appointment

We’ve spoken about the necessity of water heater maintenance before, and how it can extend the effective life of your water heater by a sizeable number of years. What we haven’t really gone into is what actually occurs during a water heater maintenance appointment. The more you know about what actually happens during a water heater maintenance appointment, the better you’ll be able to understand why it is so beneficial to your water heater. So, let’s take a look at some of the specific water heater maintenance procedures that we go through during an appointment.

Checking the Anode Rod

The anode rod is a long metal rod, designed to protect your water heater from rusting. It does this by slowly degrading over time, sacrificing itself for the good of your water heater. The problem is that the anode rod eventually degrades so much that it can no longer protect the water heater. If the rod is not replaced with a new one, the water heater tank will rust out and possibly rupture. Part of water heater maintenance includes checking the anode rod, and replacing it if necessary.

Sediment Flushing

Whether you have hard water or not, sediment tends to build up on the bottom of your water heater tank over time. If allowed to continue unchecked, the sediment buildup will eventually insulate the tank, causing your water heater to struggle to heat water properly. The best way to prevent this is to flush out the tank during a water heater maintenance appointment, which will get rid of any sediment buildup.

These are just two of the more common procedures performed during a water heater maintenance appointment. There are many other procedures conducted to ensure complete water heater health.
